The Prius is horrible on your mpg's. To get real good gas mileage, you must look at England. I was watching a Top Gear episode and they had 3 cars. A diesel Subaru Impreza wasgon (i think), a diesel Volkwagen something, almost like a Jetta and a twin turbo diesel Jaguar! All of those cars averaged over 60mpg! Twin Turbo Jaguar! 60mpg!?

Just a note. Car makers dont make the fuel milage claim/ratings most of the time, its the EPA that does. In fact when you look at the window sticker of a new car, they'll tell you how much fuel consumption can vary between the city and highway ratings depending on driving habits. But more often than not, you can easily get much better than the sticker ratings unless you drive 100% constant stop and go city driving.

yeah, driving habbits and weight have alot to do with consumption, i ended up buying the new jag xj6 diesel. jaguar says consupmtion is around 39mpg, but i am currentley averaging 47mpg! just from a different driving style!

When it comes to engines these days, its not so much as the HP rating that determins fuel milage, its the driving habits, and most of all, the weight and design of the car that affects fuel consumption. I drive a Dodge Dakota truck with a 4.7 235hp v8, it averages around 16mpg, put that same motor in a car like the Corvette and it will easily average in the low 20's just the same as their current engines which produce up to 436hp.

The current Corvettes are rated 17/26 or something like that. Before the EPA changed the way they rate fuel milage it was 19/28 which was closer to what these cars can actually get pretty easily. When it comes to engines these days, its not so much as the HP rating that determins fuel milage. Its driving habits, and most of all, how much the vehicle weighs. My Dodge Dakota truck has a 4.7 v8, averages around 16mpg. Put that same engine in a car that weighs around 3200 pounds, an easy 23mpg AVG!
